Why You Should Start Local

“When strangers start acting like neighbors…
communities are reinvigorated.”

Ralph Nader –

We all belong to some level of community with local business.
Whether you live in a town with 50 people..
Or a city with 50 million..
Each and every one of us has a community that we may refer to as our neighbors.

Unfortunately, however, not every “neighbor” is actually treated neighborly in this day and age.
It seems that more often than not, people disregard those living a stone’s throw away.

But why?

Why disregard your neighbors when considering how you can better society and flourish your local business?
Is “think globally, act locally” a sentiment of the past?
Absolutely not!

And yet, you see so many people forget that they belong to a community that should boost each other up and create a great place to live.

Nowadays, with the technology that can connect you to someone across the globe quicker than it takes to walk next door to your neighbor’s place, it’s no wonder that people are opting for the former.

However, what do you think happens when we proceed with the latter – cross the fence that separates you from your neighbor?
Spoiler alert: GREAT things.

So what are some reasons to do so?
Well..

Let’s delve in!

1. In Local business, it improves your chances of being heard and recognized.

Any idea how many local businesses are in the States alone?
Millions upon millions.
How many in your backyard?
A small fraction.

Utilize that fact!

You are not the only person who will want to see their community grow and better.
Meaning, there are people who will choose local business with you for the sole reason that you are located in the same vicinity they are!

Even down to something as essential as listing on google is affected by where you live and operate.
Conscio Marketing shows up sooner in Tempe, Arizona than it does in Manhattan, Kansas.

If you seek to help out your neighbor first and foremost, you will see that you receive a greater recognition and impact in a shorter amount of time.

2. In community, it helps improve the society in which you most intimately live in – and beyond.

So, now you’re an established local business in your community.
Congratulations!
Now what?
You know have the ability to affect your community in important ways. How well you do as a local business of your community will now directly affect how your community does.

Amazing, isn’t it?

So, now you, and everyone else in your community, has another special reason to really ensure the prosperity of your local business.

It is through the success of your local business, and your neighbors’ local business, that you get a community that builds and has everlasting effects.

3. In friendship, it creates a bond within your community that makes for better relations.

I know that you’re probably not in business primarily to make friends..
Yet..
The people who could potentially patronize your business the most could fall under those that you have developed a connection with.

Remember this:
In order for someone to truly do long-term business with you, they require 3 things.

1. They must know you.
Not just know you exist, but actually know that you are a person with good intentions and a heart.

2. The must like you.
Being likeable makes a huge difference!
Say your product is on par with someone else’s in town.
Say there is really no discernable difference between you and someone else.

But, you’re more liked.

Who do you think they’re going to choose?

3. They must trust you.
Who wants to do business with someone that they don’t trust?
What could possibly be the benefit for them to get into a situation they are not comfortable with?
Therefore, being trusted is the final key in a 3-part lock that allows people to do business with you without a worry.

And, so, make friends who know, like, and trust you!

In doing so, you will increase your business and create a community around your business that will ensure its longevity.

4. In doing good, it improves the lives of those around you that you have chosen to coexist with.

I would love to say that I’m 100% altruistic and that my intention are so pure that I have zero expectation of reciprocation.
However, in the aim for transparency, I’m not.

I try my best to do as much good as I can. I really do.
Often enough, I do them without an expectation in sight.

Altough, that doesn’t mean that I don’t want anything in return.

If I don’t see a direct return in benefit, my request is that it’s paid forward.
In paying it forward, we create a society that I actually don’t mind living in.

It takes that first ripple effect though.
Someone has to start it.

Why not you?

Accountability in Digital Marketing

“It is not only what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable.”
Moliere

Accountability in digital marketing can sometimes feel like a drag.
Who wants to have more responsibility than eating enough food and drinking enough water to survive?
Maybe throw the occasional kid or dog, but come on. Responsibility is tough!

I get it.

However, accountability is essential to being human and especially if you want to be apart of society.
So, we may as well embrace it, hold ourselves and others accountable, and create a society of conscious people who care about each other.. AND ACT LIKE IT.

I find that one of the most common ways people fall short of holding accountability well is that they may forget what Moliere is saying here.

It’s not only what we do that we are accountable for..
We are ALSO accountable for what we do not do.

We must remember this!

So, how are some ways to be more accountable?

Let’s delve in!

1. Having accountability in digital marketing means taking initiative to retain more accountability

Like I said earlier.. trust me..
I know that more accountability in digital marketing may seem like a drag not worth participating in.
However!
Imagine a society in which more people seek out accountability to retain.

Would you not want to live in that society?
Exactly.

So, be one of the people who goes out seeking ways to be more accountable. Take the extra step.

Conscio developed from the void of conscious marketing.
I decided that I would take that step in retaining more accountability for marketing.

It wasn’t a requirement.

It was my choice. One I’d choose over and over again.

2.
Having accountability in digital marketing means considering indirect accountability

Let’s put this in the social media marketing perspective.

It’s no secret that social media companies have gotten a bad wrap for their selling of data of their users to the highest bidder and manipulating people for their attention to the point of addiction.
(watch the social dilemma)
As a marketer, it is not inherently my fault that this goes on.
Right?
Sure.

However!
Although it is not my fault that this system has been put in place, it is indirectly my fault if I didn’t use the system consciously and/or contributed to the atrocities that go on around me.

That is another reason Conscio is committed to Conscious Marketing.
It may not be expected of me.

But I see the indirect responsibility I have, and accept it gladly.

3.
Having accountability in digital marketing means holding others to a high standard – and holding yourself to an even higher one.

Disclaimer: Don’t be mean.
Really. You are probably not going to incite as much change as you think by being mean to others that fail to meet your standard for consciously being.
So what should you do instead?
Educate.
Tell people why you approach something the way you do.
NOT why their approach is just wrong.
Stay in the positive light.

With that being said, do hold others and yourself to high standards.
When you see unethical practices, engage, educate, and inspire for change.

Be the good you wish to see in the world and spread the word while you’re doing it.

4.
Having accountability in digital marketing means setting intention and forgiving yourself and others when success inadvertently falls short of that intention.

Nobody is perfect.
Read it again.
Not you.
Not your neighbor.
Nobody.

Accept the mistakes you make.
Accept the mistakes others make.
It’s inevitable.

What you shouldn’t accept is the unwillingness to see something as a mistake and learn from it.
Ego has no place in growth.
It’s okay to have fallen short.
It’s not okay to purposely fall short because you don’t believe it is your responsibility.

***Before anyone claims I’m speaking from a soapbox or a high horse***
I make mistakes constantly.
While I try to learn from them, I fall short.
I only take pride in knowing that I try to be better.
That’s all I can ask of myself and others.

Try to be better than you were yesterday.

Best Practices for Longevity
– Conscious marketing

“Successful people have no fear of failure. But unsuccessful people do. Successful people have the resilience to face up to failure—learn the lessons and adapt from it.”
– Roy T. Bennett

I want to be reeaaaallly candid here.

This is easier said than done.

Nonetheless, the sentiment stands tall and true.
The fear of failure is paralyzing.
The constant fear of failure is downright inhibiting.
The incessant fear of failure will keep you from ever amounting to anything you could use to define yourself as successful.

Here’s the key:
Resilience.

It is only with resilience that you will find that success comes your way.
Everybody is at least somewhat scared.
Fear has a funny way or either driving us to success or crashing us into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Yet, if you remain resilient, you will find that what you may consider as “failure” may actually be the stepping stone you need to reach the level you dream of.
Try, fail, adapt, try again.
It’s that simple, but it’s difficult.

So, here are some notions to remember and ways to stay resilient.

Let’s delve in!

1. Marketing is a marathon – not a sprint.
Don’t expect overnight results.

One of the characteristics of humans that sets us apart from many other animals is our endurance.
Most animals have great speed, a large stature, some weaponized part of their body, or something else.

Not us.

What humans have is the capacity to keep going for long periods of time.

In our hunting days, it was the ability to run marathons that kept us fed.
Quick history lesson:
Back in the day, humans would chase, say, a buffalo.
The buffalo is surely faster, so it would outrun us.
Yet, after some time would pass, the buffalo would tire, stop, and rest.
But the human would just running, so it would eventually catch up with said buffalo.
The buffalo, now scared again, would run off again.
And so, the pattern would continue.
That is, until the buffalo would reach exhaustion.
And at that point, the buffalo can’t run any further, and once again, the human catches up.
Unable to move, the buffalo is slain, and the humans are fed.

Don’t be the buffalo that sprints, exhausts, and then keels over.

Be the human that endures the marathon to end up victorious.

2. Keep Reading, Keep Learning, Keep on Keeping on.
Then, use this knowledge.

If knowledge is power.. then what are you waiting for?
Get reading!!

Some of the most beautiful things about the human mind are our abilities to read and learn, to absorb and remember, and to then adapt and implement.

If you are blessed enough to be able to do these, please use that ability!

It is truly a gift to be able to, and if you are not utilizing your mind’s ability, you are not only wasting it..

But your mind will eventually stop being able to.

Use this wisely.

3. Take breaks regularly, lest you take a break indefinitely.

Again, stop trying to sprint, young buffalo!
You are a human. Endure the marathon wisely.

Jokes aside, take breaks.
You will not get anywhere with losing sleep and putting your health and sanity aside.

Taking a break now, will keep your mind fresh to continue on later.

Taking breaks means that you are investing in yourself now.

The biggest investment you can make into your business is to invest in yourself first.

Don’t forget, people can literally die from not sleeping. Your brain needs the break.

So, please take a break soon.
Or, you will end up taking a permanent break later.

4. This isn’t easy.
Stay Resilient, Confident, and Focused.

I do not care what some people will tell you about this:
It is NOT easy.

You have to stay resilient.
There will be ups and downs, so remember the former when experiencing the latter.
If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Stay confident.
You are capable. You are worthy. You will see the fruits of your labor.
Remember to keep your chin up.

Stay focused.
While keeping your chin up, try to keep your head down
(yes that’s a funny image to me too).
Nonetheless, this is a marathon.
Keep your goals in mind and your heart pure.

You got this!

finding Like Minds –
Conscious marketing

“In the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too)
those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.”
– Charles Darwin

Humankind, and apparently animalkind too, was always meant to collaborate.
Just take a note from Darwin’s journal itself.
Those who, throughout time, have given their trust in others have found that the mutually beneficial relationship is enough to continue survival and even prosper.

Well, nowadays, as a marketer, you won’t exactly find me hunting and gathering for survival.
To be honest, I even use Instacart nowadays to prevent Covid exposure and save time, so I don’t even go to the grocery store very often either.

But, I digress.

What I’m trying to say is that collaboration and team-efforts are good in every sense!
Whether you hunt for food or whether you hunt for leads, working with other people can prove to further your success and chance of prospering.

So, what should you know about finding these like minds?

Let’s delve in!

1. Don’t be afraid of competition. There’s typically enough to go around.

So many people seem to sincerely fear, and maybe even resent, their competition.

What’s all that about?!

Your competition is what is driving the market.
Your competition is more likely than not who blazed the trail you’re on.
And, if not, your competition is who will keep the trail clean and kept for people to walk on for years.

This is to say..
Your competition is not your enemy.
Your competition can be your bestfriend.

You should know your competition and they should know you.
Neither of you should badmouth the other.

There is very often plenty to go around, so there’s no need to diminish the efforts of another small business owner.

Of course, you should continuously strive to be the best that you can.
However, your goal shouldn’t be to run others out of business.

That is not conscious business.

2. Actively seek other profiles that are similar to yours.

There are undoubtedly businesses and social profiles that hold similar values and practices that you do.
FIND THEM!!
These businesses, whether they share the market with you or not, are bound to be beautiful connections.

This is especially true if you are a conscious business seeking other conscious businesses.

Imagine the beauty in finding another conscious business whose goal isn’t to monopolize the market, but is instead seeking to change and improve lives.

What better connection could there be?

3. Collaborate, Cooperate, Congregate.

Gather, my friends, Gather!!
Come together. Work together. Build together.

Pass leads to each other.
Share business with each other.

Give and receive benefits, advice, and knowledge.

If there’s one thing I can always remind you of..
It’s to NEVER be greedy with knowledge.

We live in the age of information. With it, access to infinite knowledge.
Don’t try hoarding the knowledge – because you simply can’t.
Instead, share the knowledge with your fellow collaborators and watch the world grow.

Create a community that you would want to be a part of.
Then, be an authentic part of it.

4. Be open to others who initiate with you first.

Consider this.
People seem to quite often be wary of the person who approaches them.
Yet, would you not want a sense of openness when approaching others?

You never know who can walk into your life and change it forever.
Always listen first.
Speak second.
Judge never.

People will go out on a whim to express vulnerability, and the beauty comes when you share the state of vulnerability together.

Come together.
Exist together.
Grow Together.

Tips for Producing Content

“Content marketing comes down to commitment. There’s no halfway. You’re either in or you’re out.”
–  Joe Pulizzi

The most important aspect of producing content is.. well.. to actually PRODUCE CONTENT.

Don’t give up.

Consistency is key.

You must be committed.

Trust me, I know it can be difficult.
I know it can feel unrewarding at times – especially at the beginning. I know.

But here’s the trick:
If you are truly seeking out to provide value to others, all you need is one person to have seen your content for it to not have been in vain.

1 person.
That’s it.

And, at that point, your content has made a difference, and there will be a ripple effect.

So, how exactly should you produce content?

Let’s delve in!

1.
Engage your audience through at least one of these methods:
Entertain, Educate, or Equip.

Entertain:
It’s the reason meme pages work.
It’s the reason movies are successful.
It’s the reason for so many things throughout life.

People just absolutely love to be entertained!!

If they can find entertainment through the content you produce, you can be assured that people will continue to come back.

Educate:
People love to learn.

If you become the person who provides value in the form of education, people will see that you are not only there to help them but that you are actually an authority of that field!

What better way to show people that you are capable of providing a service with them than proving you have the knowledge to do so?

Equip:

If you are providing people with the tools to be successful, you’ll find that people will follow you and like you and trust you and more.

Think about it.

If you are interested in marketing, and someone is providing the exact formula to be successful as a marketer.. wouldn’t you follow them?

Equip people with the tools to do things themselves.

Trust that some of those people will just prefer to have you do them instead.

2.
Stay consistent with your content by producing ahead of time, strategizing, and making content for the week (or two) ahead.

Creating content can be arduous sometimes – I know that, you know that, anyone who has ever produced content anywhere knows that.

It’s okay to admit. We can be candid here. Safe Space.

Yet, if you schedule your content and create ahead of time, you will find that this task can actually be much more enjoyable!

Creating content might even become your new favorite thing!!

Above all, stay consistent.

3. This is tough work. Use tools.

Using tools that will make your content production easier is of the essence.

One of the greatest specialties of humans is to use tools.

It’s one of the few things that separates us from the rest of the evolutionary web.
When an animal uses tools, we measure it as an incredible sense of intelligence.

Don’t forget to use tools.
Be intelligent.

Let yourself live an easier life, and enjoy content production more. Guaranteed.

4.
Be generous with your knowledge.
Be conservative with your time.

Alright this is one of the most difficult lessons I’ve ever learned.
Not that I would be stingy with my knowledge, but I was always afraid that if I gave too much knowledge away, people would no longer need me.
It’s where I derived my value from.

And, instead, I was always willing to give people my time without a blink of the eye.
And, of course, people were often taking advantage of that fact.

Then, one day, I came to this realization with the help of some book I can’t recall
(probably something by Albert Camus).
And, I switched it!

I gave my knowledge away like it was air.
And, I became incredibly conservative of who I was willing to give my time to.

Boy, what a change!

Do this, and you will see that people value you a whole lot more.
They consider you intelligent while valuing any time they get with you.

That’s how it should be.

Let your content reflect that by giving away all of your knowledge and then making a living off of your limited time.

That’s how it should be.
